In short: Derived from the Spanish verb for running, the Volkswagen Corrado was a sophisticated three-door coupe designed to supersede the Scirocco. Despite its innovative active rear spoiler and groundbreaking VR6 engine, the car initially struggled with sluggish sales due to its premium price, eventually cementing its status as a coveted automotive icon.

Manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, the Corrado launched in late 1988 as a front-wheel-drive sport compact. Built on the Volkswagen Group A2 platform, it shared components with the Golf Mk2. The car was noted for its flush-mounted windows and an active rear spoiler that deployed automatically at speeds over 100 km/h in Europe, or 72 km/h in North America. While early sales were slow because the vehicle was considered overequipped and expensive, it earned praise for its handling, with Tiff Needell calling it 'really very, very good indeed' on the original BBC Top Gear.

The most significant technical evolution arrived in 1992 with the introduction of the VR6 engine. This 15-degree narrow-angle V-engine allowed engineers to fit a six-cylinder unit into the space typically occupied by a four-cylinder engine. The VR6 necessitated wider front wheel arches and a raised bonnet, changes that were eventually applied across the model range. In the United States, this version was marketed as the Corrado SLC, or Sport Luxury Coupe. The VR6 remains the most sought-after iteration, credited with introducing the engine technology to the American market.

Throughout its seven-year production run ending in 1995, Volkswagen produced 97,521 units. The model saw several rare variants, including the UK-exclusive Corrado Storm and the extremely limited Corrado Campaign, of which only six were built as dealer incentives. Although Richard Hammond later identified the car as a 'future classic' on Top Gear, he acknowledged the historical reality that it was initially too expensive for the mass market. Today, the Corrado is frequently cited by publications like Auto Express and Car as one of the finest driver-focused vehicles Volkswagen ever produced.
