The 170-year-old British high street staple is now a global giant
In short: Boots is more than a UK pharmacy; it is a cornerstone of British high street history. Since 1935, its brands have shaped global beauty and healthcare. Now, as part of a multi-billion dollar multinational, it navigates a complex landscape of international expansion and private equity shifts.
The evolution of Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) represents a massive consolidation of retail and pharmaceutical power. Formed on December 31, 2014, the company was created when Walgreens acquired the remaining 55% stake in Alliance Boots. The UK's Boots, a brand spanning more than 170 years, joined forces with the US-based Walgreens, which manages upwards of 9,000 pharmacies.
The company's reach is vast but geographically complex. While Walgreens historically operated primarily in the U.S., the Boots brand has expanded globally. Beyond the UK, Boots-branded stores exist in Ireland, Norway, and Thailand, with franchise operations in the Middle East and Indonesia. The company also manages pharmacies in Mexico and Chile. This international footprint is supported by a sophisticated supply chain; prior to selling its wholesale division in 2021, the company supplied medicines to over 115,000 pharmacies, doctors, and hospitals across 11 countries.
The corporate structure is currently in a state of significant transition. Sycamore Partners reached a March 2025 deal to acquire WBA for $10 billion, following its 2022 Fortune 500 ranking of #18. The corporation was divided into five separate units: Shields Health Solutions, CareCentrix, VillageMD, The Boots Group, and Walgreens. This restructuring follows a period of volatility, including a 55% stock price drop in early 2024 and plans to shutter more than 2,000 U.S. locations by 2027.
Beyond retail, the company manages a diverse portfolio of heritage and modern brands. This includes the No. 7 beauty line, launched in 1935 in Nottingham, and the Soltan suncare brand, which established a UK benchmark for protection in 1939. These brands illustrate the company's dual identity: a high-volume retail giant and a curator of long-standing consumer trust.
