From a nursery office to a multi-billion dollar retail empire
In short: In 2002, two Cornell graduates started a company in a Boston nursery. Today, Wayfair manages 14 million items from 11,000 suppliers. But the journey from a niche website for media stands to a global e-commerce giant has been marked by massive expansion, legal battles, and sudden market exits.
Founded in August 2002 by Niraj Shah and Steve Conine, the company—originally known as CSN Stores—began with the website racksandstands.com. The duo, who had previously run companies like Simplify Mobile and iLLX, operated out of a makeshift headquarters in Conine's nursery. By 2006, the business had reached $100 million in sales, eventually rebranding as Wayfair in 2011 to unify a massive collection of over 200 niche shops, including specialized sites for cookware and strollers.
The company's growth trajectory has been explosive yet volatile. Revenue climbed from $380 million in 2010 to $4.7 billion by 2017. However, this scale has come with significant friction. In 2017, Wayfair was at the center of the landmark Supreme Court case South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., which allowed states to tax out-of-state sellers. The company has also faced internal turmoil, including a 2019 employee walkout over a contract to supply beds to migrant detention camps, and significant layoffs in 2020 and 2022 as post-pandemic growth failed to meet expectations.
Wayfair's strategy is currently shifting from pure e-commerce to a multi-brand, physical presence. While the main site remains a titan, Wayfair operates specialized brands like AllModern, Birch Lane, and the luxury-focused Perigold. Despite its massive scale, the company continues to restructure; in January 202<0xC2>5, CEO Niraj Shah announced an exit from the German and Austrian markets to focus on higher-return investments, a move that resulted in the loss of approximately 730 positions.
