From surplus liquidator to retail giant: the strange evolution of Neighborhood Intelligence
In short: Once a niche liquidator of failed dot-com inventories, the company formerly known as Overstock.com has undergone a radical transformation. After acquiring the intellectual property of Bed Bath & Beyond in 2023, it rebranded, pivoted through multiple identities, and is now aggressively expanding into physical retail under the name Neighborhood Intelligence.
Founded in 1997 as a discount site, the company spent two decades as Overstock.com, an online marketplace for surplus goods. Under founder Patrick M. Byrne, it became famous for its aggressive, often controversial, campaigns against naked short-selling. Byrne’s long-running legal battles against major Wall Street firms, including a $3.5 billion lawsuit filed in 2007, defined much of the company's early corporate culture. Despite these high-profile disputes, the firm achieved its first billion-dollar year in 2010, though it faced significant regulatory hurdles, including a Google penalty in 2011 for manipulating search rankings.
The company's modern era began in 2023 when it acquired the intellectual property of the defunct big-box chain Bed Bath & Beyond. This sparked a rapid series of rebrandings: the company became Beyond, Inc. in late 2023, before settling on the name Neighborhood Intelligence in 2026. This shift signaled a move away from pure e-commerce toward a hybrid model. By 2025, the firm had begun converting acquired assets like Kirkland’s into Bed Bath and Beyond Home stores, with plans to open up to 300 locations.
The strategy now involves a massive physical footprint. In 2026, the company announced the acquisition of The Container Store for $150 million, planning to rebrand nearly 100 locations as The Container Store - Bed Bath & Beyond. This marks a complete reversal from the company’s earlier digital-only focus. By consolidating brands like Buy Buy Baby and Kirkland’s under the Bed Bath & Beyond umbrella, the company is attempting to leverage legacy brand recognition to dominate the home goods market, even in regions where it previously claimed it would never return to brick-and-mortar retail.
