The accidental icon: How one pilot became the galaxy's most resilient starfighter hero
In short: Wedge Antilles is the only Rebel pilot to survive both Death Star trench runs, yet his cinematic origins were surprisingly disjointed. Portrayed by multiple actors and voices across decades, this Imperial defector evolved from a background extra into the indispensable tactical leader of the Alliance Starfighter Corps and Rogue Squadron.
Wedge Antilles first appeared in the 1977 film A New Hope, though his debut was marked by a production quirk. Originally played by Colin Higgins, the character was voiced by David Ankrum throughout the film. When Higgins struggled to remember his lines, actor Denis Lawson took over the role for cockpit scenes, leaving Higgins's brief appearance in the briefing room as a permanent, fan-noted discrepancy. Lawson would go on to define the character, masking his natural Scottish accent to portray the pilot across the original trilogy and later in The Rise of Skywalker.
Beyond the screen, Antilles holds a unique status in Star Wars lore as the only pilot to survive the decisive attack runs on both the first and second Death Stars. His tactical career began at the Imperial Skystrike Academy before he defected to the Rebel Alliance. As a founder of Rogue Squadron alongside Luke Skywalker, he participated in more victorious starfighter battles than any other character, including the defense of Echo Base on Hoth and the final assaults at Exegol and Jakku. His expertise in Imperial doctrine and dogfighting prowess made him the Marshal of the Alliance Starfighter Corps.
The character's reach extends deep into the expanded universe, where he served as the lead in the X-Wing novel series by Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allston. While much of this history was rebranded as non-canon Legends in 2014, his influence remains significant. Whether appearing in the animated series Star Wars Rebels or the Aftermath trilogy, Antilles is consistently depicted as a survivor and mentor. IGN once ranked him the 24th greatest Star Wars character, highlighting his role as perhaps the most vital ancillary figure in the entire franchise.
