In short: Kanan Jarrus, a central figure in Star Wars Rebels, began his life as Caleb Dume, a Jedi Padawan who survived the Great Jedi Purge. Beyond his role as a mentor to Ezra Bridger, his character arc is defined by sacrifice, blindness, and a name rooted in real-world geography.

Born Caleb Dume, the character was a Jedi Padawan under the tutelage of Depa Billaba. Following the execution of Order 66, which saw his master killed by clone troopers, he adopted the alias Kanan Jarrus to evade the Galactic Empire. He eventually joined the crew of the Ghost, a Rebel starship, where he became a de facto leader alongside Hera Syndulla. Though he initially suppressed his Jedi identity, he eventually embraced his role, mentoring Ezra Bridger and completing his own training to become a Jedi Knight.

The character's development was marked by significant physical and narrative shifts. In the second season of Star Wars Rebels, Kanan was blinded by the former Sith Lord Maul during a confrontation on the planet Malachor. Despite this, he continued to serve the Rebel Alliance, learning to use the Force to compensate for his lost sight. Executive producer Dave Filoni, who famously described Kanan as a cowboy Jedi, noted that the character's eventual death in the fourth season was a necessary conclusion to his arc, a sentiment supported by voice actor Freddie Prinze Jr.

Kanan's final act was a selfless sacrifice to save Hera Syndulla and his crew from Imperial captivity. By using the Force to trigger an explosion of fuel reserves for the TIE defender fleet, he thwarted Grand Admiral Thrawn's plans for mass production of the ships. This act proved pivotal to the Rebellion's success. Even after his death, his influence persisted, appearing as a voice in the World Between Worlds and as a Force spirit in The Rise of Skywalker, while his legacy lived on through his son, Jacen Syndulla.
