In short: Founded in a disco on Christmas Eve in 2000, Westside Xtreme Wrestling has evolved from a local German curiosity into a central node of the international wrestling circuit. By bridging European, Japanese, and American talent through strategic partnerships and digital innovation, it has redefined the reach of independent professional wrestling.

Westside Xtreme Wrestling, commonly known as wXw, emerged from the Ruhr district of Germany, specifically Gelsenkirchen and Oberhausen. Established by professional wrestler Peter Wiechers—known by the ring name Hate—alongside collaborators like Claudio Castagnoli, the promotion held its inaugural event at the Roxy disco in Essen. Since those humble beginnings, wXw has cemented itself as a premier German promotion, expanding its touring footprint to include Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and England by 2013.

The promotion’s influence is largely defined by its extensive network of international partnerships. wXw has collaborated with major organizations such as Japan’s Pro Wrestling Noah and Dragon Gate, as well as American staples like Combat Zone Wrestling and Evolve. These relationships have facilitated cross-promotional events, including the Gorefest series and international showcases in cities like Philadelphia and New York. In 2018, the promotion even forged a formal relationship with WWE, further integrating its operations into the global wrestling landscape.

Beyond live events, wXw has pioneered digital and educational infrastructure within the German scene. In 2016, it launched wXwNOW, a subscription-based streaming service that provides global access to live events and a deep archive dating back to 2002. Simultaneously, the promotion established the first German wrestling academy in 2016. Originally based in Essen before moving to Gelsenkirchen in 2022, the academy trains the next generation of talent, who compete for the wXw Academy Championship—a title that has seen seventeen reigns across fifteen different champions since its inception.
