In short: What began as a small New Jersey wrestling promotion in 1999 has transformed into a global powerhouse. Known for its intense hardcore matches and unique MMA-inspired style, Game Changer Wrestling has expanded from local shows to sold-out international tours, redefining the boundaries of independent professional wrestling.

Originally founded by Ricky Otazu in January 1999 as Jersey Championship Wrestling (JCW), the promotion initially focused on the New Jersey independent scene. After running its first show in Lyndhurst on January 29, 2000, JCW established itself through tournaments like the Jersey J-Cup. However, the company faced a period of dormancy after being sold to National Wrestling Superstars in 2004, only to be reclaimed by Otazu in September 2013. The company eventually opened a dedicated training academy in North Bergen in 2014. This followed the successful reclamation of the brand's rights by Otazu.

A major shift occurred in June 2015 when Brett Lauderdale and Danny Demanto purchased the company, rebranding it as Game Changer Wrestling (GCW). This era saw the promotion pivot toward hardcore wrestling and specialized tournaments, such as the Nick Gage Invitational Ultraviolent Tournament and the Tournament of Survival. The brand also expanded its reach through unique collaborations, such as the Matt Riddle-partnered Bloodsport, which fused professional wrestling with mixed martial arts. The promotion also launched a West Coast companion brand called LA Fights in late 2021. Additionally, it has established a partnership with Detroit-based Juggalo Championship Wrestling.

GCW's growth has been marked by significant international expansion and business evolution. The promotion has held events in Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, and Mexico. It has also transitioned its business model, moving from a pay-per-view focus to a monthly subscription model via Triller TV+ in October 2022. Notably, GCW achieved a historic milestone in October 2023 by becoming the first American wrestling company to broadcast live from Korakuen Hall in Japan. The company also maintains a working relationship with Germany's Westside Xtreme Wrestling. Furthermore, it has expanded its digital presence through simulcasting on platforms like IndependentWrestling.tv.
