In short: Released as a standalone Christmas single in 1994, Whatever became a landmark track for Oasis. Bridging the gap between their first two albums, the song earned critical acclaim for its ambitious string arrangements and confident swagger, eventually securing platinum status in the United Kingdom despite a notable copyright settlement.

Recorded over one week in July 1994 at Maison Rouge Studios in Chelsea, Whatever was written by Noel Gallagher. The track features the London Session Orchestra, including former Electric Light Orchestra violinist Wilfred Gibson. Its production was marked by a distinct sonic layering, incorporating handclaps and orchestral elements that drew comparisons to the Beatles. Critics at the time, including those at Melody Maker and NME, praised the song as a standout release of the year, with some highlighting its bold, unashamed approach to musical influence.

The song's success was not without controversy. Oasis reached an out-of-court settlement with EMI after Neil Innes claimed the track borrowed from his composition, How Sweet to Be an Idiot. The dispute centered on an eight-note melodic sequence shared by both songs. Following the agreement, Innes received a portion of the royalties and later referenced the Oasis track in his work with the Rutles on their 1996 album, Archaeology.

Beyond its initial release, the song maintained a long-lasting presence in popular culture. By 2017, it had achieved sales of 600,000 units in the UK, earning a platinum certification from the British Phonographic Industry. It has since appeared in global advertising campaigns, including a 2012 Coca-Cola anniversary celebration and commercials for Asahi beer in Japan. Although it was excluded from the 2006 compilation Stop the Clocks, it remains a significant piece of the band's history, having re-entered the UK charts in 2010 when it became available for digital purchase.
