In short: Facing a devastating Philistine invasion and abandoned by the divine, King Saul did the unthinkable. Having banished all sorcerers from his realm, the first king of Israel disguised himself to seek a forbidden oracle, hoping to summon the spirit of a dead prophet for one final piece of advice.

The encounter, recorded in 1 Samuel 28, depicts a moment of profound political and spiritual crisis. King Saul, who flourished in the 11th century BCE, was under immense pressure from the Philistines, whose superior iron weapons and chariots threatened the Israelite highlands. Having found no guidance through dreams, prophets, or the sacred Urim and Thummim, Saul sought out a woman in Endor. Though he had previously expelled all magicians and necromancers from his kingdom, he approached her in secret, promising her immunity from punishment.

Scholars suggest the term 'witch' may reflect later medieval Christian biases rather than the original context. Joseph Blenkinsopp argues she was likely a traditional Israelite necromancer or 'spirit-diviner.' The Hebrew text refers to her as a possessor of an 'ov'—a term some researchers, like Harry A. Hoffner, suggest refers to a ritual pit used to summon the dead. Other interpretations of 'ov' include a familiar spirit or even a reference to ventriloquism. In the Greek Septuagint, she is even called an 'engastrimuthos,' or 'belly-talker.'

The séance resulted in a grim prophecy rather than the comfort Saul sought. Upon summoning the spirit, the woman identified Saul and described an old man wrapped in a robe rising from the earth. The entity, appearing as the deceased prophet Samuel, berated the king for his disobedience and foretold a total defeat for Israel. The oracle predicted that Saul and his sons would be dead by the following day, a prophecy that preceded Saul's death at Mount Gilboa. This narrative highlights the tragic disintegration of Saul's reign and his ultimate break from the religious foundations of his monarchy.
