The priest who lost his family and his life in a single day
In short: In ancient Israel, the priest Eli presided over a sacred shrine in Shiloh. His tenure was marked by the training of the prophet Samuel, but also by the corruption of his sons. A single catastrophic battle would ultimately trigger a divine curse that dismantled his entire lineage.
Eli served as a priest and a judge of the Israelites in Shiloh for 40 years during the 11th century BC. His leadership was complicated by the misconduct of his sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who were depicted as corrupt for misusing their positions at the sanctuary. They reportedly took prime cuts of meat from sacrifices and committed adultery with women serving at the entrance. Despite knowing of their behavior, Eli only rebuked them lightly, failing to stop their actions.
This lack of discipline led to a prophecy that Eli's family would be punished. It was foretold that his male descendants would die before reaching old age and that the priesthood would be stripped from his lineage. This prophecy was realized during a conflict with the Philistines. While the Israelites believed the Ark of the Covenant would ensure victory, the Philistines captured it and killed Eli's sons at the Battle of Aphek.
The news of the defeat and the capture of the Ark proved fatal for the nearly blind Eli. Upon hearing the commotion at the city gate, he fell backward from his seat, breaking his neck and dying instantly. This event marked a turning point in Israelite history, leading to the rise of the prophet Samuel and the eventual transition of the high priesthood to the line of Zadok. For the Samaritans, Eli's establishment of a rival shrine at Shiloh remains a historical point of schism from the original sacred site at Mount Gerizim.
