In short: Founded in 1854, Wofford College remains one of the few institutions from the pre-Civil War era still operating on its original grounds. Beyond its historic Italianate architecture, the 175-acre campus serves as a national arboretum, creating a unique academic environment that blends deep history with modern global engagement.

Established through a $100,000 bequest from Methodist minister Benjamin Wofford, the college has navigated a complex history. During the Civil War, the institution saw its endowment vanish after being invested in Confederate securities. Today, however, the college maintains a robust financial standing, bolstered by a significant $150 million donation in 2021 from alumnus and former Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, pushing the total endowment past $400 million.

The academic structure is defined by a unique calendar featuring a four-month fall semester, a four-month spring semester, and a one-month January term known as the Interim. This mid-year period encourages students to step outside traditional coursework to pursue independent research, faculty-led travel projects across six continents, or professional internships. This emphasis on global experience is a hallmark of the institution; the college consistently ranks among the nation's leaders for the percentage of students earning academic credits abroad.

Wofford’s identity is further shaped by its commitment to both tradition and progress. It was the first private college in South Carolina to voluntarily desegregate in 1964 and holds the state's first Phi Beta Kappa chapter among private institutions. While the campus maintains a strong Greek life presence and competitive NCAA Division I athletics, it also fosters a scholarly culture that has produced numerous Rhodes Scholars and Fulbright recipients. The historic district, anchored by the 1852 Main Building, remains the heart of a campus where 93 percent of students reside, reinforcing a self-contained community atmosphere.
