The soulful songwriting duo born from a complex family legacy
In short: Before they were international stars, Cecil and Linda Womack were navigating a web of deep musical and familial ties. From gospel roots and the shadow of Sam Cooke to global chart-toppers, their journey is a masterclass in enduring creative partnership and rhythmic reinvention.
The partnership of Womack & Womack was defined by the marriage of Cecil and Linda Womack. Their connection was deeply intertwined with the legacy of soul legend Sam Cooke; Linda was Cooke's daughter, and Cecil's brother, Bobby Womack, had married Cooke's widow, Barbara. This complex family dynamic, which included a complicated personal history between Linda and her stepfather Bobby, provided the backdrop for a career that spanned decades of songwriting and performance. Cecil's musical journey began in a gospel group alongside his brothers, including Curtis and Harry. This religious foundation shifted in 1961 when the group, then known as the Valentinos, transitioned to secular music after meeting Sam Cooke.
While they were successful songwriters for legends like Teddy Pendergrass, the duo achieved significant international fame as performers in the 1980s and 1990s. Their 1983 album, *Love Wars*, produced by Stewart Levine, yielded hits like 'T.K.O.' and the UK Top 14 single 'Love Wars'. Their 1988 single 'Teardrops' became a massive global phenomenon, reaching number one in the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand, and number two in Germany and Switzerland. Their 1986 album, Radio M.U.S.C. Man, even featured a cover of the Beatles' 'Here Comes the Sur.' Additionally, their 1989 concert film, filmed across Europe and Australia, captured their live energy during the 'Celebrate the World' tour.
The duo's evolution eventually moved beyond the Womack name. After traveling to Nigeria and discovering ancestral ties to the Zekkariyas tribe, they adopted African names—Zek (Cecil) and Zeriiya (Linda)—and began recording as part of The House of Zekkariyas. This era included family-based recordings with their children, such as Zeumoja, Zeniya, Zeimani, and Zeapree, as they transitioned from American R&B stars to a broader, family-oriented musical identity. Under their new identity, they released the 2001 album Sub Conscience. This project featured the group ZEK, an abbreviation for Zekkariyas Enlightenment Kingdom.
