The superheroes who were almost too powerful for Superman
In short: In the 1970s, the Wonder Twins were designed with such vast abilities that they threatened to make the Justice League obsolete. From shapeshifting into mythological beasts to becoming 5,000-foot ice giants, their powers were eventually scaled back to ensure the world's greatest heroes still had a job to do.
Created in 1977 by Norman Maurer, Bill Hanna, and Joe Barbera, the Wonder Twins—Zan and Jayna—debuted in 'The All-New Super Friends Hour.' While they are now known for their specific limitations, their original concepts were far more formidable. Early designs gave Zan 'Plastic Man' powers and allowed Jayna to transform into anything, not just animals. These abilities were intentionally nerfed because they made established heroes like Superman seem 'superfluous.'
The twins' aesthetic and personalities were deeply rooted in 1970s pop culture. Their names were inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan and Jane, while their personalities were modeled after the immensely popular musical duo Donny and Marie Osmond.
Even Jayna’s distinctive hairstyle was based on a Hanna-Barbera animation checker, and her pointed ears were a nod to Spock from Star Trek. Their history is a study in narrative evolution. In the 1977 comics, they were portrayed as escaped slaves of an alien overlord, while the 1996 'Extreme Justice' series reimagined them as escaped slaves of an alien overlord who attacked civilians before being emancipated. Despite their prominence in early seasons, they were eventually marginalized in favor of teenage heroes like Firestorm, only to see a critical and commercial revival in 2019 with a 12-issue maxi-series.
The twins' mechanics remain iconic: they require physical contact and the spoken phrase 'Wonder Twin powers, activate!' Zan can manipulate water in any state—solid, liquid, or gas—even creating localized weather patterns like monsoons or blizzards. Jayna can assume any animal form, but she is bound by the 'common name' rule; if she mispronounces a name, she will assume whatever animal she actually spoke.
