A twenty-thousand-year slumber ends as the Dragon Isles emerge from hiding
In short: For ten millennia, the Dragon Isles remained hidden from Azeroth. Now, a long-dormant race of dragonkin soldiers has awakened, thrusting players into a landscape of ancient betrayals, elemental wars, and the sudden resurgence of powerful dragonflights seeking to reclaim their lost glory.
The expansion, released on November 28, 2022, centers on the Dragon Isles, a territory that had been concealed since the War of the Ancients. The setting is divided into five distinct zones: the Waking Shores, Ohn'ahran Plains, Azure Span, Thaldraszus, and the Forbidden Reach. This resurgence is marked by the awakening of the Dracthyr, a race of dragonkin soldiers who were placed in stasis for 20,000 years by Neltharion, the former Aspect of the Black Dragonflight.
The narrative tension stems from the struggle to restore the power of the Dragon Aspects by relighting their dormant Oathstones. While the Black, Green, Blue, and Bronze flights face various challenges—ranging from the betrayal of the Maruuk centaur clans to the decay of ley lines—the primary threat comes from the Primalists. This group seeks to free ancient leaders like Raszageth the Storm-Eater, an ancient proto-dragon. Tensions rise when Raszageth's downfall triggers the escape of additional Primal Incarnates, namely Iridikron the Stonescaled, Vyranoth the Frozenheart, and Fyrakk the Blazing.
Beyond the geopolitical struggle, the expansion introduces significant mechanical shifts. Players can access the new Dracthyr race and the Evoker class, which utilizes a unique momentum-based Dragonriding flight system. The level cap was raised to 70, accompanied by a revamped talent tree and profession system featuring work orders. Ultimately, the story concludes with a rare moment of unity, as the five dragonflights are reunited under the leadership of new and old Aspects, even as the shadow of Neltharion's dark legacy and the prophecy of Nozdormu's transformation into Murozond loom over the future.
