In short: In the summer of 1981, a Los Angeles drug ring thought they had hit the jackpot. By stealing $1.2 million in drugs and cash from organized crime figure Eddie Nash, they secured a fortune—but they had unknowingly signed their own death warrants.

Based in Los Angeles, the Wonderland Gang used 8763 Wonderland Avenue within the Laurel Canyon district as their headquarters. Led by Ronald Lee Launius, a former Air Force veteran, the group was a dominant force in the burgeoning cocaine trade of the era. While their primary business was narcotics, they also supplemented their income through burglaries and armed robberies of rival dealers.

The gang's downfall was triggered by a home invasion targeting Eddie Nash, an organized crime figure known as "The Nash." The robbery was facilitated by adult-entertainment legend John Holmes, a frequent visitor to the Wonderland house. On June 29, 1981, Holmes allegedly left a patio door unlatched at Nash's mansion, allowing Launius, Billy DeVerell, and David Lind to enter and confront Nash and his bodyguard, Gregory Diles.

The robbery was a Pyrrhic victory. The gang escaped with a haul valued at over $1.2 million—equivalent to approximately $4.2 million today—including cocaine, heroin, quaaludes, cash, jewelry, and antique guns. However, the violence of the heist prompted a lethal retaliation. Around 3:00 AM on July 1, 1981, a group of men entered the Wonderland residence and bludgeoned four people to death with hammers or striated metal pipes.

The victims included Launius, DeVerell, Joy Miller, and Barbara Richardson. Susan Murphy Launius, Launius's wife, was the sole survivor of the attack, though she suffered severe head injuries and a severed finger. Because the neighborhood was accustomed to loud, drug-fueled parties, neighbors did not call the police when they heard screams, delaying the discovery of the crime by over 12 hours.
