How a historic English rugby club survived financial collapse to return to the pitch
In short: Founded in 1871, the Worcester Warriors became a staple of English rugby before a 2022 financial crisis led to administration and expulsion. Yet, the club refused to stay down. By 2025, a reformed version of the team successfully navigated a path back to professional competition, proving the resilience of the sport.
The Worcester Warriors have long been defined by their ambition and their home at Sixways Stadium, where they moved in 1975. For decades, the club benefited from the significant financial backing of chairman Cecil Duckworth, which propelled them from the eighth tier of English rugby into the Premiership. Their rise was marked by a historic 2003–04 season, where they achieved a perfect record of 26 wins in the second division, earning promotion to the top flight for the first time.
However, the club's trajectory hit a catastrophic wall in September 2022. Following a tax dispute with HM Revenue and Customs, the Warriors entered administration. The situation deteriorated rapidly: the Rugby Football Union suspended the club, and by early October, all player and staff contracts were terminated. The team was eventually expelled from Premiership Rugby, and their results were expunged from the record, leaving the future of the organization in total doubt as administrators struggled to find a viable path forward.
The club's eventual revival was a complex process. After initial plans for a return were rejected by the RFU in late 2022, a new entity emerged. In the autumn of 2024, this reformed group submitted a formal request to join the second tier of English rugby. Their application was accepted, and the club officially returned for the 2025–26 season. Under the leadership of head coach Matt Everard, the reformed Warriors immediately reclaimed their competitive edge, winning the Championship title in their first season back by defeating the Bedford Blues in the playoffs.
