From news anchor to prime minister: the rapid rise of Yair Lapid
In short: Before he was leading the Israeli opposition, Yair Lapid was a familiar face on television. A journalist, author, and songwriter, his transition from the media spotlight to the highest office in the land represents one of the most significant political shifts in recent Israeli history.
Yair Lapid’s political ascent began in earnest in 2012 when he announced his departure from journalism to found the centrist Yesh Atid party. His entry into politics was marked by immediate impact; in the January 2013 legislative elections, his party secured 19 seats, becoming the second-largest party in the Knesset. This success established Lapid as a leading centrist figure, leading to his appointment as Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March 2013.
His tenure in the cabinet was relatively brief. By late 2014, Netanyahu dismissed him from the finance ministry. Lapid’s political journey later saw him serve as the Leader of the Opposition and eventually as Prime Minister. He held the premiership from July 1, 2022, until December 2022, following the dissolution of the Knesset. His 181-day term remains the shortest tenure for a non-interim Israeli prime minister.
Lapid's background is deeply rooted in Israeli media and literature. Before politics, he was a news anchor, TV presenter, and a prolific author of 12 books, including thrillers and a biography of his father, Yosef "Tommy" Lapid. His career also included songwriting for various Israeli musicians and hosting major talk shows on Channel 1 and Channel 2. Despite his high-profile career, his path was not without controversy, such as the 2012 investigation into his admission to a doctoral program at Bar-Ilan University despite lacking a bachelor's degree.
Today, Lapid continues to lead Yesh Atid and serves as the Leader of the Opposition, having previously held that role from 2020 to 2021.
