In short: Wyndham Hotels & Resorts manages over 9,000 properties across the globe, yet its origins are surprisingly personal. While the company now operates as a massive, publicly traded hospitality giant, its namesake brand reportedly traces back to a private conversation between a developer and a Fortune magazine reporter in the 1970s.

The story of the Wyndham brand begins in 1981 in Dallas, Texas, where Trammell Crow established the first hotel. According to journalist Wyndham Robertson, who profiled Crow for Fortune magazine, the name was a tribute to her. While Crow never publicly confirmed the inspiration, Robertson maintained that he admitted it to her in private. By 1998, the growing chain was acquired by Patriot American Hospitality, which later rebranded as Wyndham International.

The corporate structure underwent significant transformations over the following decades. In 2005, the Blackstone Group purchased Wyndham International, subsequently selling the hotel brand to Cendant. Cendant, a successor to Hospitality Franchise Systems, eventually split its operations in 2006, leading to the creation of Wyndham Worldwide. This entity managed a vast portfolio of brands, including Days Inn, Howard Johnson, and Super 8. In 2018, the hotel business was officially separated into an independent, publicly traded company known as Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

Today, the company operates as the largest hotel franchisor in the world, boasting a portfolio of 25 distinct brands. Its growth has been fueled by strategic acquisitions, such as the 2018 purchase of La Quinta for $1.95 billion and the 2008 acquisition of U.S. Franchise Systems. Despite its scale, the company has faced challenges, including a notable 2012 legal battle with the Federal Trade Commission over data security breaches and ongoing tensions with franchisee associations regarding their influence on corporate decision-making.

The company continues to expand its reach, recently partnering with WaterWalk to integrate extended-stay properties into its network. As of 2024, the organization maintains a presence in over 95 countries with more than 9,200 locations. While it remains a dominant force in the hospitality industry, the firm has also navigated significant public scrutiny, including a high-profile 2026 fire at a property in the Dominican Republic that resulted in a fatality and the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests.
