How an incarcerated rapper achieved unprecedented Billboard dominance
In short: While serving time in federal custody, Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, known as NBA YoungBoy, rewritten the rules of the music industry. He became the first rapper to secure three number-one albums in just ten months, proving that even behind bars, a prolific output can command the global charts.
The career of Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, born October 20, 1999, is a study in extreme commercial productivity despite significant legal volatility. Between 2019 and 2020, Gaulden achieved a feat unmatched in hip hop history: his projects AI YoungBoy 2, 38 Baby 2, and Top all reached number one on the Billboard 200 within a ten-month window. This rapid succession of chart-topping successes made him the fastest rapper to achieve such a feat, breaking a record previously held by DMX.
Gaulden’s ability to maintain this momentum was often tested by his legal battles. In 2021, he released his third studio album, Sincerely, Kentrell, while incarcerated. This made him only the third artist in history—joining legends Tupac Shakur and Lil Wayne—to debut a number-one album while in prison. His release strategy often relied on direct-to-fan platforms like YouTube, where he became the most-watched musician across all genres for 101 consecutive weeks by 2019.
Beyond the charts, his commercial footprint is massive, with over 109 million digital copies sold in the United States and 15 billion YouTube views. However, his trajectory has been marked by friction with the industry establishment. In 2022, he famously rejected a $25 million contract renewal from Atlantic Records, citing concerns over artist integrity. Despite facing a 23-month prison sentence following a conviction in Baton Rouge, his influence remains anchored by his independent label, Never Broke Again.
