Yuba City hosts one of the largest Sikh gatherings outside of India each year.
In short: Beyond its agricultural roots and the world's largest dried fruit processing plant, Yuba City is a cultural hub for the global Sikh community. Every November, thousands of visitors descend upon the city for a massive parade commemorating a historic religious milestone, transforming the quiet California town into a vibrant center.
Yuba City, the county seat of Sutter County, sits in the Sacramento Valley near the confluence of the Yuba and Feather Rivers. Originally settled by the Maidu people, the region was later granted to John Sutter by the Mexican government. By 1852, the town served as a modest steamboat landing, but it eventually grew into a significant agricultural and commercial center.
The city's cultural identity is deeply tied to its sizeable Sikh population, which ranks among the largest in the United States and outside of the Punjab state in India. Each year on the first Sunday of November, the city hosts a 4.5-mile-long parade that commemorates the 1708 receipt of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture. The event has grown exponentially over the decades; while the 2005 parade drew an estimated 56,000 attendees, participation surged to approximately 150,000 people by 2012.
While the city is known for these large-scale celebrations, its history is marked by diverse and sometimes challenging events. It has navigated natural disasters like the 1955 Christmas Eve levee break, as well as complex social narratives, including the arson of a local mosque in 1994 and a 2020 police brutality incident that resulted in a $20 million settlement. Despite these trials, the community remains resilient, maintaining unique local traditions—such as the wild chickens near Highway 99 that have become the town's unofficial mascots.
The local economy remains heavily influenced by farming, retail, and healthcare. While the California Prune Festival—later renamed the California Dried Plum Festival—ended its 15-year run in 2003 due to rising costs and competition, the city continues to serve as a focal point for regional gatherings. Its geography, defined by the nearby Sutter Buttes and the surrounding Sacramento Valley, continues to shape the daily life and development of its 70,117 residents.
