The Zastava M76: A rugged Balkan marksman rifle born from the Kalashnikov lineage
In short: Released in the mid-1970s, the Zastava M76 became the standard designated marksman rifle for the Yugoslav People's Army. While it shares the aesthetic of a lengthened AK-47, this semi-automatic weapon was engineered to deliver precision fire using the powerful 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge, proving its reliability across decades of regional conflict.
Developed by Zastava Arms, the M76 was designed to provide infantry platoons with a designated marksman capability, mirroring the role of the Soviet Dragunov SVD. Despite this functional similarity, the M76 is mechanically closer to the AK-47 and RPK design. It utilizes a milled receiver for rigidity, an enlarged rotating bolt to handle high-pressure rounds, and an AK-type gas piston system. Unlike the Dragunov, which uses a thumbhole stock, the M76 features a separate stock and pistol grip, giving it the appearance of an elongated Kalashnikov.
The rifle is chambered for the 7.92x57mm Mauser round, specifically utilizing the M49 ball ammunition or the tighter-tolerance M75 sniper variant. This cartridge provides a supersonic reach of approximately 950 meters. While the M76 is generally reliable, it is known for a specific magazine issue: the bolt hold-open feature can cause the follower to jam when a magazine is removed, as the bolt slams forward under pressure. Newer production models have transitioned from wooden furniture to synthetic polymers, reducing the overall weight by about 0.5 kilograms.
Accuracy is typically around 1.5 MOA, which is considered high quality for a Kalashnikov-derived platform. Under normal conditions, the rifle is effective against man-sized targets up to 800 meters, though skilled marksmen may extend this to 1,000 meters under optimal circumstances. Aiming is facilitated by a side-rail mounted ZRAK ON-M76 4x scope, which features tritium-illuminated reticles and bullet drop compensation. As of recent years, the M76 is being phased out of Serbian service in favor of the Zastava M91, which utilizes the 7.62x54mmR cartridge.
