How a celebrated writer became the target of intense comic book fan backlash
In short: Zeb Wells, an Emmy-winning writer for Robot Chicken and a prolific Marvel contributor, found himself at the center of a firestorm. His recent tenure on The Amazing Spider-Man sparked significant controversy, leading to public criticism, calls for course correction, and even warnings from Marvel Editorial to avoid comic conventions.
Born in 1977 and raised in Littleton, Colorado, Zeb Wells established a diverse career spanning television and comics. He gained early recognition as a writer, director, and voice actor for the animated series Robot Chicken, earning Emmy and Annie Awards for his work. By 2006, he had signed an exclusive contract with Marvel Comics, where he penned titles like Venom: Dark Origin and New Mutants. His creative reach extended into television again in 2015 with the stop-motion series SuperMansion, which he co-created and directed.
In April 2022, Wells took over as the lead writer for The Amazing Spider-Man. While he had previously written various Spider-Man stories, this run faced immediate and sustained scrutiny. Critics and fans pointed to specific narrative choices, such as the dissolution of the relationship between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, the introduction of a new love interest for Mary Jane named Paul Rabin, and the death and subsequent resurrection of Ms. Marvel. This final plot point was widely condemned as a trope known as fridging.
The backlash became so intense that Wells reported being advised by Marvel Editorial to skip public conventions following the release of issue #26, which featured the controversial death. Industry observers, including Andrew Cutler of Comic Book Resources, argued that the series required a significant course correction to improve the quality of its storytelling. Critics frequently cited a perceived over-reliance on shock value and disjointed characterization as primary failures of the run, marking a turbulent chapter in the history of the long-running title.
Despite the controversy, Wells remains a notable figure in the industry. In 2025, he collaborated with artist Greg Capullo on the Deadpool/Batman crossover, a rare event marking a formal collaboration between Marvel and DC characters. This project highlighted his continued prominence in the comic book world, even as his tenure on Spider-Man remains a subject of heated debate among readers and critics alike.
