In short: In 2018, Shah Rukh Khan took on his most physically demanding role yet. To transform a global icon into a man of three feet, filmmakers bypassed traditional prosthetics, instead using sophisticated visual effects and forced perspective to manipulate reality on screen.

Directed by Aanand L. Rai, the film *Zero* was a massive technical undertaking. To portray the protagonist Bauua Singh, the production utilized 'forced perspective'—an optical illusion technique—alongside heavy visual effects inspired by the technology used in *The Lord of the Rings*. Rather than relying on physical prosthetics that might look unreal, the crew often placed Khan in pits during filming. This allowed other actors to look down at him from a higher vantage point, creating a more convincing sense of his short stature.

The physical demands extended to the female lead, Anushka Sharma. To portray Aafia, a scientist with cerebral palsy, Sharma worked with an occupational therapist to master involuntary spasms and the physicality of a wheelchair user. The role was so immersive that Sharma often remained in her wheelchair between takes, even isolating herself from the rest of the cast to maintain the character's headspace. The production also required extreme precision; for the song 'Mere Naam Tu', Sharma was placed on an elevated platform to maintain the illusion of Khan's diminished height.

Despite its technical ambition and a massive budget—revealed to be ₹2 billion—the film's journey was fraught with complexity. Originally conceived in 2012 under the working title *Katrina Meri Jaan*, the project underwent numerous name changes, including *Bauaa*, *Bauna*, and *Batla*. While the film earned acclaim for its visual effects and lead performances, it faced critical backlash regarding its screenplay and was one of the most significant box-office failures of Khan's career, leading to his five-year hiatus.
