From 360s on bikes to championships in off-road trucks
In short: Brian Deegan redefined the limits of action sports by transitioning from a pioneer of freestyle motocross to a dominant force in rallycross. His career is a study in extreme versatility, moving from landing world-first tricks to mastering high-speed, four-wheeled off-road racing machines.
Deegan first rose to prominence in the motocross world, becoming a professional supercross rider at just 17 years old. He secured his place in history by becoming the first person to land a 360 in a freestyle motocross competition. His accolades in this discipline are massive, including 12 X Games medals, making him one of the most decorated athletes in the history of the event.
In 2009, Deegan pivoted to four wheels, entering the short course off-road racing scene. He secured the title within the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series' Unlimited Lites category, surpassing veteran competitors. This transition led to a prolific run in the 2010s, where he secured multiple titles in the Pro Lite Unlimited and Pro 2 classes, as well as a World Championship race win in 2011.
His influence extends beyond the track into vehicle design and branding. In 2012, he debuted the Metal Mulisha Monster truck, which was first showcased by Todd LeDuc in Houston, Texas. Deegan also competed in the Global RallyCross Championship using vehicles like the OlsbergsMSE Ford Fiesta and an M-Sport Fiesta, often teaming with other notable figures like Jeff Ward. His career is marked by high-stakes physical risk, including a near-fatal 2005 crash that left him with a permanent abdominal scar and a spiritual transformation.
Today, Deegan's legacy is cemented through his diverse portfolio, which includes a clothing line, a toy line called Heavy Hitters, and a collectible card game. He remains a central figure in action sports, bridging the gap between the raw stunts of freestyle motocross and the technical precision of professional off-road racing.
