The relentless dominance of Eli Tomac in professional motocross racing
In short: From a rookie debut victory in 2010 to becoming a multi-time champion, Eli Tomac has redefined the limits of the 450cc class. His career is a masterclass in resilience, overcoming severe injuries to secure historic titles across multiple manufacturers and racing disciplines.
Eli Tomac's ascent in professional motocross began with a historic rookie debut in 2010, where he secured a victory at the 250cc AMA Motocross season opener in Hangtown. This early success set the stage for a career defined by extreme versatility. He has proven his skill across various manufacturers, including Kawasaki, Yamaha, and KTM, and has achieved the rare feat of winning Daytona Supercross on three different brands.
His championship pedigree is immense. Tomac is a two-time AMA 450cc Supercross champion and a four-time AMA 450cc Motocross champion. Notably, in 2022, he became the first rider since Ryan Dungey in 2015 to sweep both the AMA Supercross and Motocross titles in a single season. His dominance in the outdoor series is particularly striking; he is one of only four riders to achieve three consecutive 450MX titles, a streak he maintained through 2019.
Beyond his individual accolades, Tomac has been a vital component of team success, including winning the 2022 Motocross Des Nations with the USA team. However, his path has not been without significant physical setbacks. He has battled various injuries, including a broken collarbone in 2014, a dislocated shoulder and torn rotator cuff in 2015, and a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2023. Despite these hurdles, he remains one of the most decorated riders in history, holding second all-time in 450cc Supercross wins and third all-time in 450cc Motocross wins.
