From 'Renaissance' to EV: The evolution of a global family mover
In short: The Kia Carens was born from the idea of a "car renaissance." Since its 1999 debut, it has morphed from a traditional MPV into a crossover-inspired strategic model. Today, it represents a pivot toward electric mobility and regional customization across emerging markets.
The Kia Carens first entered the market in May 1999 as the RS series, built on the same platform as the Kia Sephia. Its name is rooted in a poetic fusion of "car" and "renaissance," signaling a fresh start for multi-purpose vehicles. While it initially followed a traditional MPV body style, its fourth generation marked a significant design shift. Developed as a "strategic model" primarily for India, this version adopted a crossover-inspired exterior while maintaining the spacious interior required for third-row passengers.
The vehicle's history is defined by regional adaptation and rebranding. In North America, it was marketed as the Rondo, achieving over 20,000 units in its first two years before sales declined. In Australia, it was known as the Rondo7. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, the model was rebadged as the Naza Citra starting in 2005. This global footprint allowed Kia to test different configurations, from the sporty "Multi-S" concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show to various engine types including a V6 that served as the brand's last timing-belt-driven engine.
The most recent evolution is the Carens Clavis, introduced in India in May 2025. This facelifted model emphasizes high-tech integration, featuring dual 12.25-inch displays and Level 2 ADAS. Most notably, it signals Kia's entry into Indian electric vehicle manufacturing with the Carens Clavis EV. This battery-electric variant offers a claimed range of up to 490 km (ARAI standards) and will eventually be rebadged as the Hyundai Neira for the Indonesian market by July 2026.
