In short: In the 1980s, Isuzu commissioned the iconic Giorgetto Giugiaro to design a new economy car. What followed was a masterclass in global engineering—and a corporate blunder so severe it caused the designer to publicly disown his own work for a decade.

In 1984, Isuzu tasked Giorgetto Giugiaro—the man behind the 117 Coupé and the Piazza—with designing a new front-wheel-drive economy car on the R-body platform. Engineers aimed to create an international automobile featuring a rear beam axle and front MacPherson strut suspension. Giugiaro's design was so closely aligned with the proportions of the Piazza that it became a defining look for the new Gemini, appearing shorter and taller in its three-door configuration. However, the project became a case study in corporate friction. Isuzu presented the designs to General Motors before they were finalized. Without consulting Giugiaro, GM ordered a series of detail changes.

The Italian designer viewed this move as a profound insult. The fallout was so significant that Giugiaro denied the design was his until ten years after the vehicle had been discontinued. The resulting car, introduced in May 1985 as the Gemini FF, featured a wide range of powertrains, including a 1.5-liter turbocharged 'Irmscher' version producing 120 PS. While it successfully transitioned Isuzu into a front-wheel-drive era, the brand's relationship with one of the world's most influential automotive designers was permanently severed by the lack of creative autonomy.

The Gemini's journey from a 1974 rear-wheel-drive design based on the Opel Kadett C to the 1980s 'FF' model highlights the shift toward globalized manufacturing. It was sold under various identities, including the Buick Opel in the US and the Saehan Gemini in South Korea. By the time the R-body Gemini hit the streets, it represented a move toward standardized components, even if the process of creating those components caused a rift between the studio and the factory.
