In short: Unveiled in 2004, the third-generation Grand Cherokee (WK) introduced significant engineering shifts. From independent front suspension to high-performance SRT8 variants, the model line navigated a complex landscape of engine upgrades and trim-level distinctions to define a mid-size SUV era.

The WK generation, manufactured between the 2005 and 2010 model years, represented a major evolution for the Grand Cherokee. One of its defining technical shifts was the introduction of independent front suspension. The lineup offered a diverse range of powertrains, including a 3.7L V6 that replaced the previous 4.0L straight-6, and the powerful 5.7L HEMI V8. This V8 saw significant refinements; by 2009, the engine utilized variable valve timing to improve fuel economy, boosting output to 360 hp and 390 lb⋅ft of torque.

Trim levels allowed buyers to navigate between utility and luxury. The Laredo served as the base model, while the Limited added premium features like leather seating and a Boston Acoustics sound system. For those seeking maximum luxury, the Overland trim offered GPS navigation and Bluetooth, though it took a hiatus in 2010 before returning with the next generation. International markets often referred to the WK as the 'WH'.

Performance enthusiasts could opt for the SRT8, a specialized variant debuted at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. This model utilized a 6.1L HEMI V8 producing 420 hp and featured performance-tuned suspension and Brembo brakes. Despite being optimized for on-road handling by removing certain off-road gear, the SRT8 achieved 0.92 g on the skidpad and could reach a top speed of 170 mph.

The diesel offering also saw regional variation. While a 3.0L CRD V6 from Mercedes-Benz was available globally from 2005, North American production of the 3.0L diesel ceased at the end of 2008 due to restrictive emissions standards. Consequently, late-production diesel models in North America are often identified as 2008.5 models.
