In short: After a decade without a professional team, Mexico City launched the Capitanes to reignite local passion for the sport. Now a fixture in the NBA G League, the franchise serves as a unique bridge between international markets and the American developmental system, testing the viability of basketball beyond U.S. borders.

Founded in 2017 by a private investment syndicate headed by Moisés Cosío, the Capitanes emerged to fill a ten-year void in Mexico City's professional basketball landscape. Unlike previous local efforts, this franchise operated without government funding, aiming to build a competitive roster by blending national team talent with experienced international players. Their initial run in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) was marked by rapid success, including multiple appearances in the championship round and a league-best record in their second season.

In December 2019, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced the team would join the G League for at least five seasons. This move was designed to evaluate the potential for a future Mexico-based NBA franchise. The transition faced immediate hurdles; pandemic-related travel restrictions forced the team to play their entire 2021–22 season in the United States, utilizing various temporary arenas across states like Texas, Mississippi, and North Carolina. It was not until the 2022–23 season that the team finally established a permanent home at the Mexico City Arena, a venue fans affectionately refer to as Territorio Capitan.

The team's identity is deeply rooted in local iconography, featuring a logo that depicts the Monumento a la Revolución. Beyond the branding, the Capitanes have become a legitimate pipeline for professional advancement. By the 2025–26 season, the organization saw significant recognition, with head coach Vitor Galvani receiving the Dennis Johnson Trophy for Coach of the Year. Furthermore, the team has successfully facilitated NBA call-ups for multiple players, including Andersson Garcia, who signed with the Utah Jazz. As they approach a decade of history, the Capitanes continue to balance their role as a developmental partner for the NBA with their mission to anchor basketball culture in the heart of Mexico.
