When professional wrestling crosses the line into 'madness'
In short: The 2024 All Out event showcased a spectacle that polarized the industry. While critics praised the high-level athleticism of the International Championship match, the main event sparked a fierce debate over the boundaries of violence in sports entertainment.
The 2024 All Out pay-per-view, held on September 7 at the Now Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, featured twelve matches designed to advance long-running narratives. These storylines were meticulously produced on weekly programs like Dynamite, Collision, and Rampage. A primary example was the escalating feud between "Hangman" Adam Page and Swerve Strickland, which escalated from a house break and a burned childhood home to an unsanctioned 'Lights Out' Steel Cage match.
The main event became a flashpoint for controversy due to its extreme physical elements. During the match, participants utilized a staple gun, a cinder block, a burnt spike, and a steel chair. The climax involved Page shoving a hypodermic needle into Strickland's mouth and delivering a chair shot to the head with enough force to break the chair's seat. While some reviewers, such as Kevin Pantoja, described the sequence as 'madness' and gave the event a 9.5 out of 10, others were far less enthusiastic.
Industry figures like Jonathan Coachman and Dave Meltzer criticized the match for its perceived overuse of dangerous violence. Conversely, figures like Nic Nemeth and Thunder Rosa defended the level of intensity. This tension highlights a recurring debate in professional wrestling: the balance between high-stakes drama and the physical safety of the performers. Despite the controversy, the event was generally well-received, with the International Championship match between Will Ospreay and Pac being singled out as one of the best of the year.
