When a werewolf's first transformation turns him into a poodle
In short: Freddy Lupin is the heir to a werewolf pack, but his first transformation is anything but lupine. Instead of a fierce predator, he becomes a poodle. This animated adventure follows his quest to prove his status and navigate a world of dog catchers, treacherous uncles, and magical moonstones.
Released on May 29, 2020, by Studio 100, 100% Wolf is an Australian animated fantasy comedy directed by Alexs Stadermann. Adapted from Jayne Lyons' 2009 novel, the film follows Freddy Lupin, a teenager who fails to transform into a wolf, turning into a poodle instead. This unexpected outcome forces Freddy to embark on a journey to prove his worth to his pack before he faces banishment.
The narrative is driven by the loss of a magical moonstone to Foxwell Cripp, an ice cream man obsessed with proving the existence of werewolves. Freddy's journey leads him to the Coldfax Dog Pound, run by his own uncle, Hotspur, who has become the pack leader after the apparent death of Freddy's father, Flashheart. The plot involves complex betrayals, including Hotspur's attempt to turn dogs into wigs and his secret imprisonment of Flashheart using a silver bracelet.
Critical reception for the film was mixed. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 69% approval rating from 16 critics, with an average score of 5.8/10. While some critics, such as those at The Hollywood News, noted that the film borrows familiar narrative elements from films like The Lion King and How to Train Your Dragon, others, like Lisa Giles-Keddie of HeyUGuys, suggested the film's reliance on these tropes could feel unimaginative. Despite the mixed reviews, the film grossed between $7.7 million and $8.1 million worldwide.
The franchise expanded following the film's success, with a sequel titled 200% Wolf released in August 2024. Additionally, a 26-episode television spin-off, 100% Wolf: Legend of the Moonstone, premiered on ABC ME on December 28, 2020.
