How 101 Dalmatian Street reimagined a classic London canine family for the modern era
In short: Set nearly sixty years after the original 1961 film, this animated series follows a massive family of ninety-nine puppies living independently in Camden Town. With their parents away at work, the eldest siblings manage the household, navigating life in the twenty-first century without any human supervision at all.
The series originated from a concept pitched by Anttu Harlin and Joonas Utti of the Finnish studio Gigglebug Entertainment. They proposed the idea to Disney’s London animation team, eventually collaborating with Passion Animation Studios to develop the narrative. While the show utilizes digital animation, the character designs intentionally feature hand-drawn outlines to evoke the xerography aesthetic of the 1961 classic. Interestingly, the creators opted not to study the franchise's various sequels or spin-offs, focusing exclusively on the original film to maintain a distinct creative vision.
The plot centers on a sprawling family of ninety-nine Dalmatian puppies, all bearing names starting with the letter D, alongside their parents, Doug and Delilah. Delilah holds a special lineage as the great-great-granddaughter of Pongo and Perdita. The puppies reside at the titular address in Camden Town, having inherited the property from an eccentric billionaire owner who moved to an island. This premise allows for chaotic domestic dynamics, where eldest siblings Dylan and Dolly frequently assume responsibility for the household.
Production was a collaborative international effort, with Atomic Cartoons in Vancouver handling the animation. Although the show was designed to feature 101 total dogs, the creators admitted that keeping track of ninety-nine puppies proved difficult, leading to occasional shots where the headcount exceeds the intended number. The series aired twenty-six episodes between 2019 and 2020, eventually finding a home on Disney+ in North America. Despite its unique premise and dedicated production, the show concluded after a single series.
