In a post-apocalyptic world, nine rag dolls hold the fractured soul of humanity
In short: Directed by Shane Acker, the 2009 film 9 depicts a desolate Earth where humanity has been extinguished by its own creations. Nine sentient, homunculus-like rag dolls, known as Stitchpunks, emerge as the final hope. Each doll carries a fragment of their creator's soul, tasked with defeating a malevolent, soul-consuming machine.
The story begins in an alternate 1940s, where a scientist is coerced by Chancellor Ferdinand to build a highly intelligent robot. This creation, the Fabrication Machine, is weaponized to construct an army of war machines that eventually turn against their creators. Before his death, the scientist uses alchemy to craft nine Stitchpunks, imbuing each with a portion of his own soul via a talisman. These dolls represent distinct aspects of his personality: 9 is the hopeful hero, 5 is the healer, 7 is the fighter, 1 is the arrogant leader, 6 is the eccentric artist, 8 is the loyal protector, and 2 is the creative genius.
The film follows 9 as he awakens in a world where organic life has been destroyed. Alongside his fellow Stitchpunks, he navigates a landscape dominated by terrifying mechanical predators like the Cat Beast, the Winged Beast, and the hypnotic Seamstress. The conflict centers on the talisman, which the Fabrication Machine requires to sustain its power. The narrative reaches a climax when 9 realizes the talisman can transfer souls. By sacrificing the remaining Stitchpunks' captured essences, 9 destroys the machine and releases their souls, which ultimately bring life back to the planet through rain containing bacteria.
Released on September 9, 2009, the film was a stylistic gamble for Focus Features, grossing $48,559,999 against a $30 million budget. While critics praised its visual design and imaginative world-building, many found the narrative less substantial. Despite its mixed reception, the film remains a notable entry in dark animation. Director Shane Acker, who based the feature on his 2005 short film, expressed a desire to pursue darker animated projects, though no official sequel has materialized since the film's home media release in December 2009.
