In short: With over 190 candidates filing to run for the nomination, the 2024 Democratic primary was a chaotic landscape of shifting alliances. From high-profile independent pivots to last-minute endorsements, the path to the nomination was defined by a rapid sequence of campaign closures and strategic realignments.

The primary season, spanning from January 23 to June 8, 2024, saw a crowded field of over 190 candidates file with the Federal Election Commission. While President Joe Biden sought re-election, he faced notable challenges from figures like self-help author Marianne Williamson, environmental attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and U.S. Representative Dean Phillips. Phillips specifically targeted Biden’s age and approval ratings, while the Uncommitted National Movement advocated for a protest vote regarding the party's stance on the Gaza war. The Democratic National Committee explicitly stated they would not host any official debates during this period. Additionally, the party organized primaries and caucuses in all states except Florida and Delaware. The Uncommitted National Movement included progressives and socialists among its supporters.

The timeline was marked by significant volatility. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. withdrew in October 2023 to run as an independent, and Dean Phillips suspended his campaign in March 2024 to endorse Biden. Despite these exits, Phillips managed to secure the second-highest number of delegates among the primary challengers, totaling four. Marianne Williamson eventually ended her campaign on July 29, 2024, after a period of stopping and restarting her bid. The Florida Democratic Party effectively canceled its primary by only submitting Biden as a candidate. Meanwhile, the DNC reached a compromise with Iowa to allow mail-in voting until Super Tuesday. New Hampshire defied the DNC's calendar by setting its primary date for January 23, 2024.

The process culminated in a dramatic late-stage shift. Biden became the presumptive nominee on March 12, 2024, after securing over 1,968 pledged delegates. However, following a debate with Donald Trump that raised concerns over his health and age, Biden withdrew on July 21, 2024. He immediately endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who secured the support of approximately 97.21% of the delegates in a virtual roll call to become the official nominee. The race became an open contest at the convention following the President's exit. Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, ultimately lost the general election to the Republican ticket. The official nomination was finalized just one day after the endorsement occurred.
