How a romantic comedy about memory loss became a global cinematic phenomenon
In short: The 2004 film 50 First Dates transformed a dramatic premise into a lighthearted romantic comedy. By moving the setting to Hawaii and shifting the tone, the production created a lasting cultural footprint that inspired remakes across the globe, from India to Japan, Mexico, and Thailand.
The film follows Henry Roth, a marine veterinarian who avoids commitment by dating tourists, until he meets Lucy Whitmore. Lucy suffers from a fictional condition called Goldfield's syndrome, a form of anterograde amnesia caused by a car accident. Because her memory resets every time she sleeps, she remains trapped in the day of her father's birthday, October 13. To protect her, her family re-enacts that same day repeatedly, until Henry enters her life and begins finding ways to win her over anew each morning.
Originally titled Fifty First Kisses, the script was purchased by Columbia Pictures in 2002. Adam Sandler, who co-produced the film, significantly reworked the material, moving the setting from Seattle to Hawaii to create a more vibrant backdrop. Director Peter Segal, brought on by Sandler, helped refine the narrative, moving away from claustrophobic café scenes toward more expansive locations like Kualoa Ranch. While the film received mixed reviews, it became a commercial success and a template for international adaptations.
The production relied on a mix of real-world locations and studio magic. While much of the film was shot on location in Oahu, interior scenes like the Whitmore residence were filmed on sets in Los Angeles. Animal scenes, including those featuring the walrus Jocko, were filmed at Six Flags Marine World in California. The film's legacy is marked by its unique soundtrack, which featured reggae-style covers of 1980s and 1990s hits, and its enduring influence, spawning remakes in at least six different countries over two decades.
The film's emotional core rests on the evolving relationship between Henry and Lucy. By using a video diary to help Lucy process her condition, the couple finds a way to build a life together despite her memory loss. The story concludes with a hopeful vision of their future, featuring their daughter and a life lived on the water, proving that even with severe memory impairment, connection remains possible.
