In short: Directed by Michael Bay, the 2019 Netflix feature 6 Underground follows a team of vigilantes who erase their identities to topple a brutal dictator. Despite massive viewership numbers and a staggering production budget, the film faced a critical divide and ultimately failed to launch the intended franchise for the streaming giant.

The film centers on a billionaire inventor who, after witnessing atrocities in the fictional nation of Turgistan, recruits a squad of specialists to execute a coup d'état. These operatives, known as ghosts, include a spy, a hitman, a parkour expert, a doctor, and a driver. Their mission involves replacing a ruthless leader with his democratic brother, a plot that takes them from the streets of Florence to the skies above Hong Kong.

Production was an exercise in excess, utilizing a $150 million budget to secure unprecedented access to military hardware, including ten Black Hawk helicopters and six Apache gunships provided by the United Arab Emirates military. The film features elaborate stunts, such as a high-speed chase through historic Italian centers and parkour sequences choreographed by the British team Storror. Principal photography concluded in December 2018, with the film debuting on Netflix exactly one year later.

Critical reception was polarized. Detractors labeled the work as loud, nonsensical, and prone to the director's worst stylistic impulses, while some supporters praised its delirious, high-octane energy. Regardless of the artistic debate, the film was a commercial powerhouse, with Netflix reporting over 83 million households viewed it within the first month, totaling more than 205 million hours watched in that period.

Despite these metrics, the project stalled. By July 2021, Netflix film executive Scott Stuber confirmed that no sequel would be produced. He cited a lack of creative cohesion and an inability to cultivate a deep, lasting connection between the audience and the characters, concluding that the film simply did not reach the threshold required to justify further investment in the franchise.
