What happens when a futuristic space pilot crash-lands on prehistoric Earth?
In short: In the 2023 science fiction film 65, an ancient astronaut named Mills finds himself stranded on Earth sixty-five million years ago. Alongside a young survivor named Koa, he must navigate a landscape teeming with aggressive dinosaurs while racing to reach an escape shuttle before a cataclysmic asteroid strike seals their fate.
Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the film follows Mills, a pilot from the planet Somaris, who takes a two-year expedition to fund his daughter's medical treatment. After his ship, the Zoic, is damaged in an asteroid storm, he crashes on Earth. Initially contemplating suicide after discovering his passengers perished, Mills finds hope when he encounters Koa, the sole survivor of the crash.
The narrative centers on their perilous trek across 15 kilometers of prehistoric terrain to reach a functioning escape shuttle. Along the way, they face various threats, including theropods, Lagosuchus, and a persistent archosaur. The bond between the two deepens as they overcome language barriers and the harsh environment, eventually discovering that the asteroid debris threatening the planet will strike in less than 12 hours.
Production for the film began in December 2020, with filming locations spanning Louisiana and Oregon. The visual effects were managed by Framestore and Ghost VFX, while the score underwent changes, ultimately crediting Chris Bacon. Despite a $45 million budget, the film received mixed reviews, holding a 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 40 out of 100 score on Metacritic.
Upon its March 10, 2023 release, the film grossed approximately $60.7 million worldwide. While it debuted to $12.3 million in the United States and Canada, it struggled to win over critics, who noted the film's difficulty in balancing its high-concept premise with its execution. The story concludes with Mills and Koa escaping just as the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event begins, leaving the planet to transform through the ages.
