A gritty thriller adaptation that divided critics with its dark, sprawling, and intense narrative
In short: Directed by Nick Cassavetes, the 2023 action thriller God Is a Bullet follows a detective infiltrating a satanic cult to rescue his kidnapped daughter. Based on a 1999 novel, the film features a complex collaboration between a desperate father, a cult escapee, and a mysterious social renegade.
The film draws its narrative from the 1999 novel by Boston Teran, centering on Detective Bob Hightower. After his ex-wife is murdered and his daughter abducted by a satanic cult, Hightower abandons traditional law enforcement methods. He teams up with Case Hardin, the only woman to have successfully escaped the cult, and a shadowy figure known as The Ferryman. Together, they attempt to dismantle the organization and confront its leader, Cyrus, in a quest for both rescue and personal closure.
Production for the project spanned several months in 2021, with principal photography beginning in Mexico City in May and concluding in New Mexico that August. Wayward Entertainment acquired the distribution rights in April 2023, eventually releasing the film in the United States on June 23, 2023. The film features a cast including Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maika Monroe, and Jamie Foxx, with Sidney Kimmel serving as an executive producer.
Upon release, the film faced significant critical scrutiny, resulting in generally unfavorable reviews. Critics frequently pointed to its lengthy 156-minute runtime and dark, nihilistic tone as primary obstacles to its success. While some reviewers appreciated the performances of Coster-Waldau and Monroe, others criticized the film for its perceived misogyny, excessive length, and a narrative structure that struggled to balance its rescue plot with deeper character development. Despite these polarized reactions, the film remains a notable example of a modern, gritty action thriller that aimed for an arthouse sensibility.
