In short: In the world of A Dog's Journey, reincarnation isn't just a spiritual cycle; it is a deliberate mission. Before a dying dog is euthanized, his owner asks him to perform one final task in his next life: look after a specific child. This request sets a multi-generational odyssey in motion.

The narrative follows the spiritual journey of a dog originally known as Bailey, a St. Bernard/Australian Shepherd mix. After his owner, Ethan, discovers a tumor in Bailey's stomach, he asks the dog to care for his stepdaughter, C.J., in his next life. This request initiates a series of reincarnations where the dog—voiced by Josh Gad—takes on different breeds to fulfill this duty. The journey spans several lives and decades. Bailey is first reincarnated as Molly, a female beagle, who is secretly adopted by C.J. as a teenager. After Molly's death in a car accident, the spirit returns as Big Dog, a male English Mastiff in Pennsylvania, and eventually as Max, a male Biewer Terrier.

Throughout these lives, the dog navigates complex human dynamics, including C.J.'s abusive relationship with her mother, Gloria, and her eventual musical career. The mechanism of the 'journey' is defined by the dog's ability to retain memories and skills across incarnations. For example, Max uses knowledge gained as Molly to detect cancer in C.J.'s best friend, Trent. The film concludes with a reunion where Ethan recognizes Max as Bailey by having him perform a trick only the original dog knew. The story serves as a meditation on the enduring bond between humans and animals, suggesting that love can transcend physical death through a cycle of service.

The film, directed by Gail Mancuso and based on W. Bruce Cameron's 2012 novel, premiered on May 17, 2019. While it serves as a sequel to 'A Dog's Purpose,' it follows a distinct path of reincarnation. Despite its emotional weight, the film received mixed reviews from critics and saw a lower domestic opening of $8 million compared to its projected $10–14 million, ultimately grossing $75.6 million worldwide.
