In short: In the fictional town of Bryakhimov, a beautiful young woman faces a desperate struggle to secure her future. Directed by Eldar Ryazanov and released in 1984, A Cruel Romance is a cinematic adaptation of Alexander Ostrovsky’s 1878 play, Without a Dowry. The film is set in the fictional town of Bryakhimov along the Volga River during 1877 and 1878. It follows the story of Larisa Ogudalova, the youngest daughter of a widowed noblewoman who has fallen into poverty. With her sisters already married, Larisa becomes the focus of her mother’s efforts to secure a wealthy match, despite Larisa’s lack of a dowry.
The narrative centers on Larisa’s complex relationships with various men, most notably the charming but duplicitous shipowner Sergei Sergeevich Paratov. After Paratov abruptly abandons her, Larisa agrees to marry the foolish and possessive postal official Yuliy Kapitonovich Karandyshev out of sheer despair. The tension escalates when Paratov returns to the city, concealing his own impending marriage to a wealthy bride while rekindling Larisa’s hopes. The film’s climax unfolds over a single day, marked by a disastrous dinner party and a fateful excursion on the steamer Swallow.
The story takes a dark turn when Paratov abandons Larisa once more after a night together, leaving her to face the predatory intentions of other wealthy men like Mokiy Parmenovich Knurov and Vasiliy Danilovich Vozhevatov. These men treat her future as a commodity, even resorting to a coin flip to decide who might claim her as a kept woman. Ultimately, the social pressures and personal betrayals culminate in a tragic act of violence by Karandyshev, leaving Larisa mortally wounded. The film is noted for its evocative Russian romances, performed by Valentina Ponomaryova, which have achieved widespread popularity in Russia.
