How a songwriter's personal heartbreak became a cinematic summer anthem
In short: When DreamWorks commissioned a song for Shrek 2, lead singer Adam Duritz faced a creative block. Instead of writing about ogres, he channeled his own complicated romance into a track that would eventually dominate international charts and earn an Academy Award nomination.
In 2/2004, Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows was tasked with creating an uplifting opening for the Shrek 2 animated film. To prepare, Duritz attended a DreamWorks animation camp and viewed approximately half of the movie. Despite the high-profile assignment, Duritz admitted to Billboard magazine that he struggled with a creative block, as he was unaccustomed to writing music on demand.
The studio provided a specific creative direction: the song should be bright and focused on Duritz himself rather than the character of Shrek. This allowed the singer to draw from his own life, specifically the experience of falling in love with an "inconvenient" lover. On May 3, 2004, the track "Accidentally in Love" debuted as a single, fourteen days prior to the film's debut.
The song's commercial performance was significant. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Triple-A chart for five weeks during July and August 2004 and reached number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Internationally, it reached number three on the Irish Singles Chart and number 11 in Australia. The track's success was recognized with several prestigious nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy.
Critics offered varying perspectives on the track's nature. While Susanne Ault for Billboard described it as a "light and breezy" summer kickoff, she also noted its potential for being "a little sappy." Other reviewers, such as Johnny Loftus, highlighted its energetic, "cartoon-y sunshine" beat, noting it was the band's most uplifting work since their 1999 track "Hanginaround."
