How a South African animated film brought a colossal Baobab tree to the screen.
In short: Released in 2012, Adventures in Zambezia follows a young peregrine falcon who leaves his isolated home to join an elite bird patrol. Set within a massive tree overlooking Victoria Falls, this South African production marked a milestone for its studio, blending high-stakes aerial action with a story of redemption.
Directed by Wayne Thornley, the film serves as the debut feature for Triggerfish Animation Studios. The narrative centers on Kai, a spirited falcon who discovers that his father, Tendai, once belonged to the Hurricanes, an elite defense force protecting the bird city of Zambezia. The city itself is built into a colossal Baobab tree perched precariously on the edge of Victoria Falls, serving as a sanctuary for birds from across the globe.
The plot escalates when a predatory rock monitor named Budzo conspires with a group of marabou storks to invade the city and consume the eggs in the nursery. This threat forces Kai to confront his family history, including the tragic loss of his mother, Amaya, who perished during a previous encounter with Budzo. The conflict culminates in a dramatic battle where the city’s inhabitants must unite to defend their home against the encroaching monitor army.
Beyond its technical achievement as a South African production, the film garnered significant regional recognition. It secured the award for Best South African Feature Film at the 2012 Durban International Film Festival and won Best Animation at both the South African Film and Television Awards and the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards. Despite its critical success in these arenas, the film holds a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on eight reviews.
The production featured a notable voice cast, including Jeremy Suarez as Kai, Abigail Breslin as Zoe, and Leonard Nimoy as the wise eagle Sekhuru. The musical score, composed by Bruce Retief, was released in 2013 and features fourteen tracks. By the time of its theatrical release on 3 July 2012, the film had been produced on a budget of R173 million, eventually earning $34.4 million at the box office.
