The actress who broke the Hollywood casting mold with Prey
In short: Amber Midthunder didn't just land a role in a major franchise; she helped pioneer a new standard for Indigenous representation. By starring in a film with an entirely Native American cast, she moved beyond the sidelines of cinema to become a central figure in modern storytelling.
Amber Midthunder's path to stardom was not a linear ascent. Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, she spent her childhood in Santa Fe before moving to Los Angeles at 17. Her early career was marked by experimentation; she briefly considered a career in makeup artistry and even trained as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor. Her first professional acting credit appeared in 2008, but she initially struggled with the craft, even disliking her first experience on set before finding her footing in various New Mexico productions.
Her career reached a significant milestone in 2022 with the film Prey. As Naru, a Comanche healer, Midthunder became the lead of the first Hollywood franchise movie to feature an all-Native American cast. The production also made history as the first feature film to include a full Comanche language dub. This role earned her critical acclaim, including a Breakthrough Performance Award at the Saturn Awards and a Critics' Choice nomination for her work in the film.
Midthunder's lineage and identity are central to her work. Born into a Thai-Chinese maternal line, she holds tribal membership within the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribe, while her paternal heritage includes Sisseton Dakota, Hunkpapa Lakota, and Sahiyaiyeskabi Assiniboine lineages. Her background informs her commitment to visibility, as seen in her roles in Reservation Dogs and her upcoming work in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, continuing to push for authentic Indigenous narratives in mainstream media.
