How Michael Bay turned a claustrophobic pandemic pivot into a high-octane heist thriller
In short: When the COVID-19 pandemic stalled his original plans, Michael Bay pivoted to a smaller, character-driven project. The result was Ambulance, a relentless action thriller filmed in Los Angeles that relied on experimental drone cinematography and real-world improvisation to capture the chaotic tension of a bank heist gone wrong.
Originally announced in 2015, the project underwent years of development hell with various directors before Bay signed on in 2020. Seeking to escape the isolation of lockdown, Bay envisioned a claustrophobic, character-focused film that departed from his typical explosion-heavy style. He intentionally avoided watching the 2005 Danish original, opting instead to craft a unique vision that drew inspiration from 1990s action staples like Speed and Bad Boys.
The production was defined by its speed and resourcefulness. Filmed over thirty-eight days in early 2021, the crew utilized innovative first-person view drones to navigate tight urban spaces, a technique Bay adopted after observing the work of LightCraft. To maintain authenticity, the production hired real LAPD officers, SWAT teams, and trauma surgeons. In one instance, Bay famously negotiated a free freeway closure by recruiting patrol officers on the spot, saving the production hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Despite the technical ambition, the film faced a difficult theatrical run. Grossing $52.3 million against a $40 million budget, it struggled to draw older male audiences back to cinemas in a post-pandemic market dominated by superhero blockbusters. Critics were divided, with some praising the film's relentless energy and Bay's visual panache, while others criticized its predictable narrative and over-the-top performances. Nevertheless, the film found a second life on streaming platforms, proving that even a box-office underperformer can find its audience in the digital age.
