The studio that birthed Apocalypse Now and the first Tony Award
In short: In 1969, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas founded a studio that would redefine independent filmmaking. From avant-garde masterpieces to digital pioneers, American Zoetrope has navigated bankruptcy, name changes, and family legacies to remain a cornerstone of cinematic history.
American Zoetrope was born from a creative rift. After Coppola left Warner Bros.-Seven Arts in 1970, he established the studio in San Francisco. The name itself is a nod to the zoetrope, a pre-cinema device gifted to Coppola by collector Mogens Skot-Hansen. This foundation allowed for a diverse slate of projects, including George Lucas’s pre-Star Wars hits like THX 1138 and American Graffiti, alongside works by international icons like Akira Kurosawa and Jean-Luc Godard.
The studio's history is marked by ambitious expansion and financial turbulence. In 1980, it expanded into Hollywood as Zoetrope Studios, a move that mirrored the trajectory of DreamWorks. However, the company faced a period of bankruptcy between 1983 and 1992 following the loss on One from the Heart. During this era, Coppola sold the Hollywood facilities to the Singer Family, and the company eventually reverted to its original name in 1991 after securing a first-look deal with Columbia Pictures.
Today, the studio represents a multi-generational legacy. Ownership passed to Coppola's children, Roman and Sofia, by 2007. While it remains a production powerhouse—producing 15 Academy Award-winning films—it has also expanded into theater. In 2024, the studio achieved a milestone by earning its first Tony Award for the musical adaptation of The Outsiders. It continues to operate out of the historic Sentinel Building, where Coppola maintains a café and a deep connection to the neighborhood's literary history.
