Can a meta-reboot of a 1997 cult classic actually bite back?
In short: The 2025 Anaconda reimagines the creature-feature franchise as a meta-comedy about friends attempting to film an unauthorized remake in the Amazon. Starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, the film blends jungle survival with industry satire, ultimately grossing $135.4 million worldwide while navigating a chaotic production and mixed critical reception.
Directed by Tom Gormican and co-written with Kevin Etten, the 2025 Anaconda serves as the seventh installment in the series. The plot centers on four childhood friends—Doug, Griff, Kenny, and Claire—who travel to Brazil to shoot a low-budget version of the 1997 original. Their amateur production quickly descends into chaos when they encounter a real, murderous anaconda, while simultaneously crossing paths with a rival Sony film crew that actually holds the legal rights to the franchise.
The production history was as turbulent as the film's narrative. Development began in January 2020, but the project evolved significantly under Gormican’s direction. Jack Black and Paul Rudd were cast in August 2024, famously swapping roles at Black's insistence. Principal photography took place in Queensland, Australia, starting in January 2025, with the third act requiring rewrites due to the impact of Cyclone Alfred. The film features cameos from original cast members Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube, the latter of whom appears in the final act to assist the protagonists.
Upon its December 25, 2025, release, the film earned $135.4 million globally. Critical response was polarized; Rotten Tomatoes reported a 48% approval rating, with reviewers noting the film's struggle to balance its conflicting comedic and action tones. While some critics praised its lighthearted, family-friendly humor, others felt the meta-commentary lacked sufficient bite. Despite the mixed reviews, the film remains a unique entry in the franchise, blending real-world industry frustrations with the absurdity of a giant snake attack.
