The disputed origin of a nation's unofficial funeral anthem
In short: Robbie Williams' "Angels" is so ubiquitous it was voted the song Britons most want played at their funerals. Yet, the song's creation is shrouded in a bitter legal and creative tug-of-war between a pop superstar and a songwriter who claims he was erased from the narrative.
Released in December 1997, "Angels" catapulted Robbie Williams to superstardom, becoming a staple of late-90s pop culture. Williams claims he co-wrote the track with Guy Chambers in just 25 minutes while watching a water fountain outside a café. He describes the lyrics as a tribute to his aunt and uncle, exploring the belief that deceased loved ones return to watch over the living. The track gained prestige through its moving impact, securing a 1999 Ivor Novello Award and being selected as the finest UK tune from the prior 25 years during the 2005 Brit Awards. However, a different story exists from Irish songwriter Ray Heffernan. Heffernan asserts he wrote the first version in 1996 following his girlfriend's miscarriage, specifically inspired by the line about loving an angel instead of a baby. He claims he met Williams in a Dublin pub and recorded a studio demo that week. Heffernan alleges that Williams sought to protect his credibility as a songwriter by refusing to credit him, eventually buying the rights for a sum that rose from £2,500 to £7,500 to avoid a lawsuit. The tension remains unresolved. While Williams has never confirmed Heffernan's authorship—calling him a "fantasist"—Heffernan continues to seek recognition. In 2023, he expressed hurt over Williams accepting the Ivor Novello Award without acknowledging his contribution. By August 2025, Heffernan planned to pursue legal action under new EU copyright laws to seek retrospective compensation for a third of future royalties, highlighting the enduring complexities of creative ownership in the pop music industry.
