The celestial bounty hunter who was once a stolen Marvel property
In short: She began as a fierce adversary in the pages of Spawn, but her journey involves a high-stakes legal battle over ownership. Her history includes a sudden shift in cosmic lineage and a major move from Image Comics to the Marvel Universe, transforming from a celestial hunter into an Asgardian princess.
Created by Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman, Angela first appeared in the 199/93 comic Spawn #9. Originally an angel and bounty hunter working for Heaven, she served as a recurring foe and occasional ally to the antihero Spawn. Her early years were defined by her role as an adversary, though a 1994 limited series explored a temporary alliance between the two characters.
The character's history is marked by a significant legal dispute over ownership. While McFarlane initially claimed the characters Gaiman introduced were 'work-for-hire,' a 2002 lawsuit resulted in a judgment for Gaiman. After a 2012 settlement granted Gaiman full ownership, he sold the rights to Marvel Comics. This transition allowed the character to debut in the 2013 Age of Ultron series, accompanied by a redesign by Joe Quesada.
Marvel later fundamentally altered her origin during the 2014 'Original Sin' storyline. Rather than being a simple angel, she was revealed to be Aldrif Odinsdottir, the daughter of Odin and Freyja, and the sister of Thor and Loki. This retroactive retcon established her as an immortal Asgardian who had been raised by Angels after being presumed dead as an infant.
Today, Angela is established as a powerful figure within the Marvel Universe, possessing super strength, flight, and speed that exceeds lightning. Her mythos has expanded to include roles as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and a leader in the black ops team Strikeforce.
