The dual identity of a voice behind the rainbow
In short: How does a Canadian musician become the literal voice of two iconic cartoon ponies? Ashleigh Ball's career bridges the gap between mainstream pop-rock and some of the internet's most dedicated subcultures, proving that children's entertainment can foster profound adult communities.
Born in Vancouver on March 31, 1983, Ashleigh Ball has built a diverse portfolio as a Canadian voice actress and musician. While she is widely recognized for her work in major toyetic franchises—including Barbie, Bratz, Littlest Pet Shop, and Sonic Prime—she achieved a unique level of cultural penetration through the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
Ball notably voices and sings as two of the show's six main characters: Applejack and Rainbow Dash. This specific role led to her becoming a central figure in the 'brony' community, which consists of adult fans of the series. Brent Hodge's documentary, A Brony Tale, explores her deep connection to this specific community. The film captures her interactions at events like BronyCon 2012 and Everfree Northwest, where she appeared as a guest of honor.
Beyond her voice work, Ball maintains a distinct musical identity as a member of the pop rock band Hey Ocean!. She also transitioned into solo artistry, releasing the music video 'Crazy' on May 2, 2017, followed by her debut solo EP Gold in You on June 2. Her perspective on her work suggests a deep awareness of her audience's connection to the content; she noted that My Little Pony remains an important part of many people's lives, ensuring the longevity of its fan base.
Interestingly, data records also list a British field hockey player by the same name, highlighting how individual identities can overlap across different global contexts and sports.
